Where Pigeons Sleep
Zachary Jacob
i don’t know morse code
damn,
thought you did
we lost count a long time ago because it doesn’t seem
to matter when weeks aren’t regulated by republicans and
the last soldier we saw was a couple moons ago.
an unopened rubber and a couple joints in a
gutter that we could have used if it hadn’t rained
last night but we are glad we found that vending
machine this morning in the plaza.
i like it this way better despite the loneliness
and the creeps. i especially like those rare
occasions when we rediscover our almost lost hope
and get a few handles and have a fire in the street.
i liked it most when we were in new york
and we broke into that bank and had the biggest
fire we ever had with chairs and pictures
of professionals and handfuls of franklins.
at least we made it south and some say they have
connections but who knows anything anymore.
you get used to the sound of collapsing buildings
at night and zoo animals hanging out near camp.
i remember the first elephant i saw. it was in
cincinnati in the north part of town and it made
me want to cry but i didn’t because we were on
the move. you get used to not seeing anyone for
moons at a time. you get used to it unless death
is your option. if it wasn’t for all the freedom
of jumping into any pool and sleeping anywhere
and going anywhere we felt like ever going
i might completely lose it. when i think about
what happened on that day
i always counter the thought with
at least what is left is free.
you scared?
you always ask me that
and i always say yes but what i’m most
frightened of isn’t the republican army
but how bright the stars are.
