OCTOBER 2013

In thirty years the environmental changes we have wrought on our planet will be irreversible, say some scientists. Human activity has caused at least half of climate change in the last half-century, hundreds of scientists say. They are 95% certain of this, the surest they've ever been, says a United Nations report. But meanwhile our news media and politicians ignore this dire situation and its probable consequences. News sources say we could see more tornadoes like the one that ground up Moore, Oklahoma; stronger and more floods like those that inundated Colorado towns; another Sandy or Katrina or two in our lifetimes; more crops wiped out by drought; and more forestland consumed by roaring wildfires. The Arctic ice cap could melt nearly completely in summer, and sea levels could continue to rise. In the Antarctic, the ice cap could continue to increase slightly.
And if greenhouse gas emissions continue to climb as they have, the resulting temperature rise and its deadly effects would get even worse, the report says.
It's time for us to demand that our legislators heed these issues and take action on them, rather than ignore them, as they tend to do. We are talking about the future of our planet and our children.
On that happy note, this month we bring you great new writing from an outstanding group of writers: David Hancock, Jay Duret, Sheila MacAvoy, Karen English, Carol Nissenson, Kim Livingston, Marc Berman, Leisha Douglas, Roy Bentley, Maria Torruella, Rachelle Dimenstein, Carl Wooton, and Doug Bolling.
Enjoy this month's issue.
