If Only a Thousand Heartbeats
by F. John Sharp
You are a fog
I walk in the gray
darkness cutting a path
eddies of misty worry
swirling in my wake
clinging to eyelashes
I blink to the beat
your weakening heart
sound carries
search for a clearing
you on a blanket
I've brought wine
a kiss to make you whole
step after step
follow your voice
singing to me We
are not yet there
and I am not
to give up my hike.
