A Moment in Time
Nancy Machlis Rechtman
For the briefest moment in time
We are here
It’s the blink of an eye
The inhalation of a breath
Lips parted for a kiss.
Yet we think we’re forever
When we turn our head
Or close our eyes
Or let our mind wander if only for a millisecond
Those who we love vanish.
Disappearing from our line of sight
Never to return
Although we like to believe they stay with us
On a higher plane
Because how else can we go on?
We shatter
Even though we should have known
That this world will break our hearts
But their absence
Knocks us to our knees
Supplicants begging for another chance
That we’ll never get
The palpable void wrecks our souls
And destroys the fantasy we’ve tried so hard to maintain
That tomorrow always comes.
