Speech as Flight
George Moore
Some say that something sure
will fly, some word involving
you, the morning when thin
was better than full,
a bird of unknown genus
out of our shared origins.
But the bird is a metaphor
for hunger too, and a constant
reminder of what absence does
to the living. Spring brings back
that hard-edged imagery of my
small-boned inconsequence.
Something sure will fly
between the wing and the air
that is all of language.
