Comatose Leaf
Diane Webster
Comatose, the leaf lies on the ground
for so long that decay meanders over
its veins; a fuzzy mold of chrysalis
transforms the thin foil of foliage
into a hulk of juices secreting essence
of former flamboyance until it eases
and succumbs to the soil’s hunger.
