Climate Science
Thomas Piekarski
I believe it’s time we kiss off la-la land,
that venerable southern California coast.
Newport, Ventura, Malibu, Santa Monica,
Del Mar, Laguna beaches surrendering
status quo they’ve enjoyed for millennia.
They’re unaware of subtle changes nature
is imposing upon them, every new wave
stealing a little more of their territory.
The day will come soon enough when
no longer will those beaches support
lingerers in the luxurious summer sun.
Once the final climate curtain is drawn
and a new dawn slowly migrates across
the vermillion horizon, they’ll be gone.
This could take many decades, and yet
quite creepy to think of, a snowballing
black shadow, its fate gathering steam.
Thinking otherwise would be to trust
that those beaches will be able to resist
the computable evolution our planet
is saddled with. I sincerely doubt it can,
and scientific evidence backs me up.
