One Man and No Moving Truck
Todd Mercer
Benny had to carry much of his apartment’s contents down to Chinatown, on foot. He took a few items at a time that were too large to hand-carry on a train. It was hard going, fish bowl by chaise lounge, every evening for a week.
He missed Callie sorely already. He wasn’t proud of the feeling, but missing her car was a part of that. He was genuinely wistful for her endearing quirks and their five beautiful months together, three and a half of them exclusive.
The love seat almost broke him. It was the heaviest item he didn’t abandon in the old place for Big Johnny Chicago to junk out. Of course Johnny was going to eat the deposit. The loveseat took eleven hours. He may have been crying when he finally hauled it up the stairs to his new studio room on Wentworth.
About halfway there Benny wondered, where are the Sherpas when you need them? As in Sherpas are famously handy at carrying supplies, but more importantly if there’s a shortcut average humans are ignorant of, Sherpas are supposed to have practically supernatural powers of shortcut divination. Perhaps it was not strictly necessary to drag one’s living room suite from Milwaukee Avenue through Logan Square, then Lincoln Park, Near North Side, through all of West Loop, Loop, South Loop to reach Chinatown.
Then he felt like a shoehorn for wishing that people of another ethnicity were available to do his heavy lifting. Bad mojo, amigos.
It was better to clear his head and focus on a meditation of breath as he lugged that solid oak bastard block by block by (Mississippi out, Mississippi in), partly so in the future he could tell his friends that he did it the hard way and not be fabricating.
Men get like that sometimes.
