what I fear most is winding up
back in inpatient. Sunday afternoons,
visitation, sitting by a window
alone in the foyer. A receptionist
peeking from behind the counter
every few minutes, all nosy.

to the front gate, smelling sun-
baked lawn and cigarettes. Chin
in my hands like a kid waiting
after school. I slowly realize no one
is coming, and they didn’t forget.
