On the Side
Richard Rubin
The good stuff is next to me:
a love story—two actually,
one divorce, one lasting a long time,
and ghosts that remain;
a reconciliation with an enemy,
(a women was involved);
intimate parties, Cabernet
Sauvignon, smoked oysters, and
once, a chocolate croissant;
a gift to the art museum,
ballroom dancing at the reception;
a cat who lived to be 21;
a stepson, who lives elsewhere,
and is a source of regret;
a mother with Alzheimer’s,
the bottom
nobody cares to see.
I am careful not to get too close,
I can feel the heat from here.
